About Jon

Thanks for being here. If you're looking for writing and editing you can count on (and relax about), you've come to the right place. I’ve pretty much done it all, from high-level editorial planning to razor-sharp line and copy editing to lively writing for national magazines, web sites, and marketing agencies. I’ve crafted hundreds of articles. I’ve been a staff editor and contributor at Travel and Leisure and the Utne Reader, run an online culture-and-business web magazine, covered brain science for a medical-news service, won awards for both writing and editing, and made scores of editors and producers happy.

What I Offer

I’m fascinated by the intersections of personal growth, mental and physical health, education, and the arts, and I’ve explored them for years. My first plan was to become a professor of Asian studies, but I took a swerve into the livelier field of journalism, writing about Japanese popular culture and culturally alert travel. It was a few years later, however, that I found my groove: articles about how Americans live now, how they can be happier and healthier by exploring their values, understanding psychological and spiritual principles, expanding their creativity, and learning, lifelong. And all this time I was learning and practicing editing, too, with some of the best people in the business.

Making complex content understandable

If there’s a single through-line in my work, it’s probably been my ability to take complicated content—modes of meditation, personal-relationship problems, contemporary public art and studio craft, academic specialties—and make it understandable  and actionable, without “dumbing it down.”

My wide knowledge in a number of fields, from history, art,  and spirituality to creativity theory and mental health, means that I’m quick off the mark with assignments and able to grasp the big picture; my years as an editor mean that I know what the stresses of that job are, and how to collaborate as only a colleague can.
